Tracking (Track)

Fly horizontally, safely, with the group

Tracking prioritizes horizontal translation over pure vertical. Done well, it covers distance, manages group separation, and enables dynamic, fluid team jumps.

What is Tracking?

Tracking uses a streamlined body position to generate lift and horizontal speed. Jumps may be flat (mostly horizontal) or angled (horizontal + vertical), with planned trajectories, turns, and levels.

Main objectives

  • Adopt an efficient position (streamlined, stable, readable).
  • Hold your slot in the flow: levels, distance, heading.
  • Maintain altitude awareness at all times.
  • Respect track‑specific break and drift procedures.

Types of Track jumps

  • Flat Track - maximum horizontal movement, limited vertical variation.
  • Angle Flying - diagonal trajectories (inclination), combinations of turns and levels.
  • Dynamic lines - sequences with heading/level/speed changes, planned at briefing.
  • Choice depends on group experience, weather, and the day’s air plan.

Group safety & rules

  • Clear briefing: heading(s), levels, exit order, roles (leader, points), key altitudes, break & track, landing circuits.
  • Break‑off: announced at briefing (altitude + procedure), energetic separation then track.
  • Air plan: account for wind, other groups, landing area.
  • Exits: separate ‘fast’ (angles) from ‘slow’ (belly/RW) groups; avoid conflicting lines.
  • No cutting back in: if you lose the flow, do not cut through the group.
  • Altimeter/audible: required regardless of level/club; keep a safety margin.

Track initiation

Conditions
